Beyond the Goodies: Sweet prayers and spicy pretzels by the Sisters of St. Benedict

Pretzel packs for the Goodie Box ready to pack and ship
Next time you visit your local grocery store, check for pretzel snacks that market themselves as "prayed over while packed" or that "proceeds support helping the homeless".
While there are some fantastic national brands with great missions,  the Sisters of St. Benedict have built a unique mix of history, mission, and product into their Prayerful Pretzels that truly sets them apart.
First, the history: Within the Christian Church of the Middle Ages, pretzels were regarded as having religious significance for both ingredients and shape. The knot shape has been claimed to represent hands in prayer. Moreover, the three holes within the pretzel represent the three persons of the Holy Trinity: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. As time passed, pretzels became associated with both Lent and Easter. Pretzels were hidden on Easter morning just as eggs are hidden today, and are particularly associated with Lent, fasting, and prayers before Easter. (source: wikipedia)
Not sure this is just a coincidence, but the Monastery is located in Ferdinand, Indiana which was settled in the 1850's by German speaking people. Pretzel baking started in central Europe, and perhaps the pretzel tradition came with the culture!? You decide!

Second, the Mission: While education has been a primary ministry for their community since its beginning, the sisters minister in diverse ways including: teaching; serving in parishes; offering retreats; providing health care; counseling individuals; working with immigrant populations; and helping the homeless, poor, and those recovering from addictions.

Sister Romaine packs each pretzel bag with love and prayers

Through their multifaceted spirituality and hospitality ministry, they offer retreats, personal enrichment programs, parish missions, religious music, spiritual direction, and facilitation services.

As they work with the people whom they encounter in their ministries and on a daily basis, they keep in mind their mission statement: “We, the Sisters of St. Benedict of Ferdinand, Indiana, are monastic women seeking God through the Benedictine tradition of community life, prayer, hospitality, and service to others. By our life and work, we commit ourselves to be a presence of peace as we join our sisters and brothers in the common search for God.”

Everything that they do focuses on being a presence of peace in a world that is wounded by violence, intolerance, and injustice.

Third, the product: The Prayerful Spicy Pretzels are hot with just a hint of sweetness. Their satisfying crunch and savory spiciness are sure to please anyone who enjoys salty snacks. Those who prefer a gluten-free option will be pleased with their Gluten-Free Prayerful Pretzels. They offer all of the flavor but none of the gluten. Comes in 4 and 8 oz packs!

The Sisters of St. Benedict prove that in an ever changing, fast paced world the things they choose to focus on consistently reflect their values and their purpose: demonstrating their respect for tradition, active promotion and practice of their mission, and building trust and authenticity into every product they make.
